Peter Machajdík
Biography
Peter Machajdík is a Slovak composer whose work spans orchestral, chamber, vocal, electronic and multimedia music. A founding member of the experimental ensemble Transmusic Comp., he has developed an international career across contemporary music festivals and concert series. His music has been performed by the Slovak Chamber Orchestra, Quasars Ensemble, NeoQuartet, Kwartludium and a wide range of soloists and chamber groups.
Machajdík often works with economical musical materials, building atmosphere through repetition, timbral contrast and carefully shaped musical time. His chamber catalogue includes And the Air and the Ground Were Clean Again (2022) for oboe, clarinet, bassoon and two accordions, Danube Afterpoint (2015) for piccolo, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, two pianos and string quartet, and Signes de la mémoire (2018) for clarinet, violin, cello and piano. His orchestral music includes The Day After Which Mankind Became Wiser and the accordion concerto Gegen.Stand.
Why this music interests us
Machajdík's music demonstrates how a restrained musical vocabulary can create a distinctive and absorbing sound-world. And the Air and the Ground Were Clean Again (2022) is especially interesting for Resonance: an unusual meeting of oboe, clarinet, bassoon and two accordions, with published performance materials and a recording. His larger Danube Afterpoint, involving two pianos, winds and string quartet, offers a contrasting chamber prospect. Both works invite listeners to hear familiar instrumental colours in unexpected combinations.
