THE RESONANCE ATLAS

Ljubica Marić

Biography

Ljubica Marić (1909–2003) was a Serbian composer whose music brought together modernist techniques and an individual engagement with older musical traditions. She studied composition in Belgrade and Prague and became an important figure in twentieth-century Serbian music. Her catalogue includes orchestral, vocal and chamber works, with a distinctive approach to musical line, texture and historical resonance.

Why this music interests us

Marić's Wind Quintet (1931) offers an early and practical entry into her chamber catalogue, while Archaia II (1993), for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, presents a contrasting late work for a compact reed trio. Her musical language and place within Serbian modernism make these works particularly meaningful for Resonance's Balkan Voices strand, where musical individuality matters more than generic ideas of regional style.
