THE RESONANCE ATLAS

Andrey Rubtsov

Biography

Andrey Rubtsov is a Russian composer, oboist and conductor whose chamber catalogue includes works for wind quintet, wind quartet, wind quintet with piano and mixed wind-and-string ensembles. His Three Moods for Woodwind Quintet (2002), Four Bagatelles for Wind Quartet (2007) and Matisse-Sextet (2016) show a sustained engagement with wind instruments.

Why this music interests us

Rubtsov's chamber music has unusually close connections to Resonance's practical forces. Three Moods and the Matisse-Sextet offer contrasting opportunities for wind players, while the Four Bagatelles and RNO Overture extend the possibilities to smaller and mixed ensembles. His work exemplifies how a living composer's substantial wind catalogue can provide the foundation for thoughtful programmes.
