PROJECT
Stories in Sound

THE PROJECT
A story you can hear unfold
A character can arrive in the sound of an oboe. A bassoon can make an entrance no one forgets. We are exploring chamber works that let children follow a story through the voices of the instruments and meet the players bringing it to life.
THE MUSIC
Listen to the characters
Ruth Gipps’ The Three Billy Goats Gruff gives this project its starting point. Three wind players and a narrator tell a familiar tale together. From there, we want to find other pieces that reward young listeners’ imagination and give the music room to surprise them.
RUTH GIPPS · OBOE, HORN, BASSOON & NARRATOR
The Three Billy Goats Gruff
Gipps turns the folk tale into a short musical adventure. The oboe, horn and bassoon help bring the goats and their encounter with the troll to life, while the narrator guides the story. It is an inviting first work around which to shape a family concert.

THE PROJECT
A concert taking shape
The Three Billy Goats Gruff shows how much three players and a narrator can do with a story. We are building a family programme around music that gives children something to follow, listen for and talk about afterwards.
THE STORY
Meet the goats
Gipps’ oboe, horn and bassoon bring distinct characters into the room.
THE PLAYERS
Hear the instruments
Seeing the musicians play makes each change of voice and character part of the experience.
WHAT COMES NEXT
More stories to discover
We are looking for further chamber works that could sit alongside Gipps in a concert for young listeners.
