PROJECT
Balkan Voices
Distinctive chamber music from across the Balkans.
THE PROJECT
Many voices, close enough to hear
A Serbian piano recital opened a wider search into chamber music from across the Balkans. We are drawn to the different ways these composers write for small groups of players: the character of each instrument, the energy between them, and the musical worlds they bring into the room.
THE MUSIC
Music worth exploring together
Ljubica Marićs Duvački kvintet has become an early centre of this project: a wind quintet we love and can imagine performing. Nina Šenk’s Kontrasti offers a more demanding possibility. The music of Isidora Žebeljan and Aleksandra Vrebalov is drawing us further into the search.
LJUBICA MARIĆ · WIND QUINTET
Duvački kvintet
Written for flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon, Duvački kvintet is the first work in this exploration that has moved from discovery to a genuine wish to perform. Its score gives us a place to begin listening closely as players.

THE PROJECT
A programme taking shape
This project begins with works and composers we have responded to, rather than a fixed survey of a region. Marić and Šenk suggest contrasting possibilities for the wind quintet; Žebeljan and Vrebalov invite us to explore further chamber combinations. We will follow the music, learn what we can play well, and let the programme grow from there.
SERBIA
Duvački kvintet
Marićs wind quintet is our first firm musical choice: a work we have heard, love and want to play.
SLOVENIA
Kontrasti
Šenk’s quintet is a compelling possibility for this programme.
FURTHER VOICES
Where the search leads
Žebeljan and Vrebalov are drawing us towards other chamber works and new combinations of players.
