THE RESONANCE ATLAS
Žibuoklė Martinaitytė
Biography
Žibuoklė Martinaitytė (born 1973) is a Lithuanian composer whose work ranges from chamber music to orchestral scores, often exploring unusual combinations of timbre and the extremes of instrumental register. Born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), she studied composition at the Lithuanian Academy of Music with Bronius Kutavičius and Julius Juzeliūnas, graduating in 1997, and later attended composition courses including Darmstadt and IRCAM-associated programmes.
Her music has been performed internationally by ensembles and orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and Synaesthesis Ensemble. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2020. Her catalogue includes the orchestral works Horizons and Millefleur and the chamber-orchestral Chiaroscuro Trilogy. Martinaitytė has a particular interest in bringing less prominent orchestral instruments, including bassoon, tuba and trombone, into expressive focus.
Why this music interests us
Martinaitytė's music is compelling for its sense of space, instrumental intensity and the expressive possibilities of unfamiliar timbral combinations. Her willingness to give traditionally supporting instruments a more prominent role speaks directly to Resonance's interest in music that changes how listeners hear an ensemble. The contrast between immersive sound-worlds and sharply defined instrumental gestures makes her catalogue a rich area for exploration.
