Wenbin Lyu
Biography
Wenbin Lyu (born 1994) is a Chinese composer and guitarist whose music brings together contemporary instrumental techniques, energetic rhythms and subjects drawn from nature, science and digital culture. He studied at the China Conservatory, New England Conservatory and the University of Cincinnati College–Conservatory of Music, where he completed a doctorate. His work has been performed by ensembles including Eighth Blackbird, Akropolis Quintet, Sandbox Percussion and the International Contemporary Ensemble.
Lyu's chamber catalogue includes a sequence of three reed quintets: Subsonic Pulse (2023), Field Guide to American Birds (2026) and Birds-of-Paradise (2026). The first was conceived for low winds and later adapted for reed quintet; alternative versions include quartets for different wind or string combinations. His music has been featured at numerous contemporary music festivals, and he has received recognition from the ASCAP Foundation and The American Prize.
Why this music interests us
Lyu's reed-quintet writing offers a lively perspective on a relatively new chamber formation. Subsonic Pulse (2023) is a compact, rhythmically driven work that makes imaginative use of low sonorities; Field Guide to American Birds and Birds-of-Paradise (both 2026) suggest contrasting approaches to nature and instrumental colour. Together these works show how much variety the reed quintet can accommodate.
