THE RESONANCE ATLAS

Thea Musgrave

Biography

Thea Musgrave (born 1928) is a Scottish composer whose output includes operas, orchestral music, concertos and chamber works. She studied at the University of Edinburgh and in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. Her music frequently explores instrumental dialogue and dramatic relationships between performers, bringing a strong sense of theatre to concert works as well as the stage.

Why this music interests us

Musgrave's Wind Quintet (1992) offers a particularly persuasive meeting of musical invention and instrumental craft. Her Take Two Bassoons (2011) explores the character of two matching instruments in a compact duet, while Out of the Darkness, catalogued as a 2025 composition and premiered in 2026, places the bassoon against full orchestra. These contrasting works demonstrate how a composer with a major international reputation can still offer specific chamber pieces deserving more frequent performance.
