Ramin Amin Tafreshi

Biography

Ramin Amin Tafreshi (born 1992) is an Iranian composer and pianist based in the Netherlands. His work brings together instrumental composition with interests in literature, theatre, dance and storytelling, and frequently explores relationships between Iranian and European musical cultures. His chamber catalogue includes Fractured Glances (2018) for solo bassoon, a Trio for Flute, Bassoon and Piano (2016), and Paradoxical (2016) for mixed wind, percussion and piano ensemble. His music has received recognition in the Netherlands, including a Young Art Support Amsterdam award in 2023–24.

Why this music interests us

Tafreshi is of particular interest to Resonance for his distinctive use of the bassoon in both solo and chamber settings. Fractured Glances (2018), a seven-and-a-half-minute solo work, and the compact Trio for Flute, Bassoon and Piano (2016) offer contrasting ways of exploring the instrument's expressive character. His wider interest in musical storytelling and the meeting of cultural traditions makes his catalogue a valuable area for further listening.
