THE RESONANCE ATLAS
Jeremy Thurlow
Biography
Jeremy Thurlow is a British composer, pianist and writer whose work moves between chamber music, orchestral scores, opera, vocal writing and music for unusual instrumental combinations. He studied with Alexander Goehr and Peter Wiegold, and has written concertos for piano, trumpet, flute, horn, cello and bassoon. His music has been performed by the BBC Philharmonic, BBC Singers, Endymion and several leading string quartets.
Thurlow draws inspiration from natural processes, literature and the interplay of different musical traditions. His works include Search Engines, A Sudden Cartography of Song and a substantial chamber catalogue. He is associated with Robinson College and the Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge, and his music is published by United Music Publishing.
Why this music interests us
Thurlow's Blithe Wine brings bassoon together with string quartet, an unusually expressive chamber combination. His wider catalogue moves between literature, nature, opera and concert music, suggesting opportunities to connect unfamiliar instrumental works with ideas beyond the score. For Resonance, the appeal is in the intimacy and distinctiveness of his chamber writing rather than novelty of instrumentation alone.
