THE RESONANCE ATLAS

Jarkko Hartikainen

Biography

Jarkko Hartikainen is a Finnish composer whose work explores the physical and perceptual possibilities of sound. He is particularly interested in acoustic phenomena, resonance, rhythm and the close relationship between composition and the bodies and techniques of performers. His music often emerges from detailed collaboration with instrumentalists and is deliberately specific to the instruments for which it is written.

Hartikainen has been artistic director of the Uusinta Ensemble since 2023 and is pursuing an artistic doctorate at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. His music has been performed by groups including defunensemble, Ensemble SurPlus, Ensemble Adapter, Tapiola Sinfonietta and the London Sinfonietta. Alongside his compositional practice, he has worked in contemporary music research and teaching.

Why this music interests us

Hartikainen's music focuses attention on the physical life of sound: its resonance, movement and transformation. Anklang (2009), for flute, bassoon, percussion, violin and cello, offers an unusually practical point of entry to this world, bringing five distinctive timbres into close dialogue over approximately thirteen minutes.
