THE RESONANCE ATLAS

Frederik Neyrinck

Biography

Frederik Neyrinck (born 1985 in Kortrijk, Belgium) is a Flemish composer and pianist whose music encompasses instrumental chamber works, opera and music theatre. He studied composition with Jan Van Landeghem at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and pursued further study with Marco Stroppa in Stuttgart and Clemens Gadenstätter in Graz. A founding member of the Odysseia Ensemble, he has worked with groups including I SOLISTI, Klangforum Wien, Nadar Ensemble and Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart.

Neyrinck's music often develops through gradually changing repetitions and transformations of musical material, including timbre and instrumentation. His work in theatre has grown alongside his instrumental writing: projects include the chamber opera i c o n, the family opera Kruistocht, and music-theatre works Landru, Wild and PINOKKIO. He was composer in residence at Concertgebouw Brugge in 2017–18 and is an artist in residence with I SOLISTI for 2020–28.

Why this music interests us

Neyrinck's music offers an intriguing relationship between instrumental precision and dramatic imagination. His interest in evolving musical patterns gives small changes of colour and gesture an expressive purpose, while his work for the stage demonstrates how contemporary composition can speak through character and narrative. For Resonance, this breadth creates opportunities to think about chamber music as both an intimate musical experience and a form of theatre.
